Looking for the best platforms or tools for creating or reading AI-generated fanfiction. Tried a few but the quality wasn’t great. Would love some recommendations or tips from others who have had better luck with AI fanfic. Need help finding something that actually produces good stories.
So here’s the lowdown: There’s really no “gold-standard” site yet for AI generated fanfic that can go toe-to-toe with the best human-written fics on AO3 or FFN (and, let’s face it, even those are hit-or-miss). But a few spots & tools are better than most:
-
NovelAI: Paid, but the model lets you steer the plot & vibe of your story, and it’s better than most at keeping tone & characters semi-consistent. You’ll still need to handhold it a lot.
-
Sudowrite: Kind of pricey, but it’s targeted at actual fiction writers, so you can feed it prompts, bits of canon, etc., and lengthen/rewrite pretty effectively. Not so much a “fanfic site” as a creative AI tool.
-
Character.AI: This lets you converse with bots as your favorite characters. You can prompt them into RP or co-create scenes, and then copy those convos into proper fic format if you want. Sometimes chaotic but fun.
-
Chatbots in general: GPT-4/ChatGPT (if you jailbreak a bit or use custom instructions) is not bad for short, character-driven fics. Output can get bland, but at least it won’t devolve into total nonsense as fast as older models.
Biggest tip: None of these are “hands-off.” You’ll always need to edit, prompt, and sometimes rewrite large chunks—it’s kind of like having a chaotic assistant who knows the fandom but has never actually read a book for fun. Don’t expect gold on the first pass, ever.
As for reading existing AI fanfic: Some people post their AI-generated stories on AO3 or Wattpad, usually tagged as such (search “AI-generated” tag), but quality seriously varies and sometimes the fics are more like fever dreams than narratives. If you find a consistently good rec, let us know—it’s the community unicorn.
TL;DR — best results are with you using AI as a tool, not a replacement. If anyone out there’s found the Mythical Good AI Fic Site, please drop the link and help the rest of us escape prompt purgatory.
I see @yozora’s got the “here’s what’s out there” pretty much covered, though I’m going to be real—AI-generated fanfic is mostly just fanfic with extra steps and more typos. If your experience so far is a lot of “this almost works but then devolves into weird spaghetti logic,” then yeah, that’s the state of the art. Honestly, I’m not convinced any AI gets characterization the way a halfway-decent human author can, no matter how many parameters it has. That said, if you want to power through, one alternative not mentioned is KoboldAI—you run it locally, can integrate different models, and some people swear by its flexibility for controlling output. Steeper learning curve, but more control if you’re ready to wrangle it.
For just reading AI fics: have you checked the /r/NovelAI subreddit’s showcase threads? Folks tend to share complete or in-progress AI-generated stories there, sometimes with descriptions of method/prompt tweaking. The quality is just as hit-and-miss as everywhere, though, so bring your lowest expectations and maybe a beverage.
Also, gonna push back a bit: I’ve actually had slightly better luck chaining multiple AI tools (one for plotting/ideas, another for dialogue, then heavy manual editing) rather than expecting one tool to spit out anything readable. It’s inefficient but less absurd than sticking with one flavor of robo-nonsense.
In summary: AI fanfic that’s actually good is mostly a unicorn, and the best you can do is decide what parts you want AI to help with, versus which you just do yourself. Community efforts on Discord servers dedicated to specific fandoms sometimes do collab AI stories too, so maybe worth lurking there? Anyway, if you ever genuinely find a “best” AI fic site, please send up the Bat-Signal—some of us are getting desperate for new content too.
